Merry Christmas to Peter Wilson. When it was suggested that Peter Wilson should be independent of the old board so that we can have a fresh start Peter responded with "That's your issue". Summary of the meeting here: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=594

Re: CPA director Caroline Spencer appointed WA Auditor General

Agreed how she finds the time to do both roles would an issue though she is not president like Tyrone Carlin Auditor General of a State is not a trivial role. It would also be an issue if the definition of employment in the WA Act is broad enough to cover contractor or a person running their own bus...

Re: 10 Apr 2018 - AFR - Numbers game as losses lead to big cuts at Chartered Accountants ANZ

CAANZ never had an OTT CEO like AM but as accountants we have to bottomline it and in the losses at CAANZ speak for themselves. Like CPA they had a failed initiative intended to benefit members. Clearly they both underestimated the costs and risks of attempting to establish an in house member servic...

Re: CPA director Caroline Spencer appointed WA Auditor General

You would hope that CPA and the WA Govt had considered this and taken legal advice before CPA announced she would stay on with the board. It does not appear that clause (a) would prohibit her from being a CPA director or member unless CPA was specifically listed in Schedule 4 of the Act. I haven't l...

Re: Methinks we lost the war

OK I will try to play devil's advocate. Any lawyer worth their salt will say that it was intended to "promote excellence, enterprise and integrity". Excellence and integrity in having a qualification and platform and one which was free of commissions blah blah. Enterprise in promoting another income...

Re: Methinks we lost the war

CPA needs to undertake an appropriate forensic accounting review of the accounts of CPA Australia over the last ten years to look at how things went so wrong and ways to improve, and stop it from occurring again. Also look at whether inappropriate activities which require legal action is necessary,...

Re: AFR 15th Sept Jane Hume's article

Hi Brett, I totally get it that there are bigger issues but I was just focusing on fact checking this one thing not having a go or saying it could undermine everything. 100 is 100 and 1000 is 1000. If Hume had said you had emailed 10 members it would be just as wrong. I don’t see facts and accuracy ...

Re: AFR 15th Sept Jane Hume's article

Hi Brett, fact checking that it was 100 not 1000 members you included in your email to Malley on 24 Feb. Senator Hume in her AFR article said you emailed 1000 members but AFR previously confirmed it was 100 for example on 2nd of May: "Mr Stevenson sent the email to senior members of the CPA, includi...

Re: AFR 7 Aug 2017 - Inside story of Alex Malley's final days at CPA Australia

Early in the day, the directors made the decision to fire Malley. It is still unclear why the board didn't just use the standard governance protocol of standing Malley aside on full pay until the inquiry, announced the previous week, ran its course. edmundtadros@afr.com.au Well it's rock and hard p...

Re: AFR 7 Aug 2017 - Inside story of Alex Malley's final days at CPA Australia

hear hear!! The article gave an intriguing inside view of what happened of CPA leading to the firing of Malley. Especially Wade as the unrepentant Malley diehard. I do not get to this day why the former majority of board members who resigned did not vote for an independent inquiry when they were on ...

Re: Announcement from the Board of CPA Australia

We would not know what Dickson is on at the moment.About $400K is the maximum as per the constitution but they have said they are allowed to pay whatever they like from CPAA Advice. I guess it's probable that he is on the same as Tyrone was which is over $400K, yes over the Article 45 limit. But th...

Re: Announcement from the Board of CPA Australia

What a joke. Do they truly believe members will be happy with their half baked idea that they can appoint new members onto remuneration committee, new directors onto the board and a new CEO. I hear you but there will be a majority or totality of new directors who were never part of the Alex thing s...

Re: Announcement from the Board of CPA Australia

The corporate structure also needs to be overhauled . Why do we need Dickson at $900k as president and a CEO at $1.8m along with other executives all getting huge money while still teaching and being on the faculty of one of our imminent universities and even on the boards of other organisations an...

Re: Announcement from the Board of CPA Australia

We need a constitution change to allow members direct voting of directors, who would run for election just the way the corporations act default governance is designed to work. Re: Brett's Update 3rd August 2017

Thanks Brett for the very detailed update. You were curious about the governance structures of other organisations at the hearing and I did have a look at AICD. AICD has a federation structure like CPA with state based Division Councils each of which gets a director on a national board. The national...

Re: Message from Mr McPhee about Independent review requesting submissions.

I have seen directors on boards put in no effort and sell their souls for $25000 to $30000 and then people put their heart and soul into charity boards for no money so it depends. Someone above said directors work 12 days a year. Well it is true some directors cruise on by but you can't just count t...
