Thought Brett and others may find this of interest. Wonder if he was asked to leave Sydney Uni?
Southern Cross University has announced the appointment of Professor Tyrone Carlin as its new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic).

Professor Carlin comes to Southern Cross from the University of Sydney, where he is Professor of Financial Regulation and Reporting. His impressive academic and senior management record includes positions as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Registrar), Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education Operations) and Co-Dean of the University of Sydney Business School. He was Dean of Law at Macquarie University before joining the University of Sydney.
Southern Cross University Vice Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker said he was delighted to announce Professor Carlin's appointment after an extensive international search.
"Tyrone brings a depth of experience to the role, through both his academic and business engagements, that will further propel Southern Cross as Australia’s Engaged University," Professor Shoemaker said.
"We are looking forward to working with Tyrone and his team on progressing the critical strategic activities of the Academic portfolio and, together with our Executive team, in strengthening the University’s academic and financial future."
Professor Carlin holds an LLB (Hons I) and LLM from the University of Sydney and is the recipient of the Law Graduates Association Medal in Law. He holds a B Com (Accounting, Finance) and MCom (Hons) (Accounting) from the University of New South Wales and a PhD from Macquarie University. His academic interests include contract and commercial law, financial reporting and public financial management.
He will be based at the University's Lismore campus and commences on the 12 November.

Demoted Tyrone Carlin lands another lofty role

Remember the heyday of Tyrone Carlin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sydney, non-executive director of Teachers Mutual and president of CPA Australia? He really devoted himself to that (full-time) executive gig at the helm of the prestigious sandstone's operations, toiling for 60,000 students and 5000 staff, salary undisclosed but undoubtedly closer to seven figures than to zero. On the side, he was trousering $72,000 in board fees from the credit union and a whopping $390,657 atop CPA, allowing its Naked CEO (Carlin's former colleague at Macquarie University) Alex Malley to run riot.
Set-ups that sweet cannot last forever. And as damning revelations of CPA's appalling governance and dubious expenditure emerged in May 2017 and its members broke into open revolt, Carlin resigned the lucrative role. Malley was sacked three weeks later and in November it emerged that CPA's board (Carlin included) twice increased Malley's termination entitlements in direct conflict with independent advice on the matter.
In October last year, Carlin was demoted by Sydney Uni's Vice-Chancellor Michael Spence and returned to a teaching role. Just imagine what his undergraduate students of "financial regulation and reporting" learned from him. The mind boggles.
But Carlin mustn't have enjoyed his undignified return to the coal face of academia. He's quit Sydney to reclaim the DVC appellation… in Lismore. Camperdown's gain will be Southern Cross University's loss. He'll be in with the local property developers in no time.
As you'd imagine, SCU's announcement was laden with narrative obstacles. Vice-Chancellor Adam Shoemaker (his ancestors clearly weren't keepers of the scrolls) noted Professor Carlin's "highly impressive" service to the "professional practice communities" and labelled him "a very strategic and accomplished leader". Yeah, just ask the poor number crunchers toiling away at H&R Block on Lismore High Street how strategically their $720 per year was lavishly disbursed from a Southbank Tower. The $64,000 question: will Carlin turn up with Malley at Ballina RSL's next annual general meeting? That joint's a cashbox!
|Merry Christmas to Peter Wilson. When it was suggested that Peter Wilson should be independent of the old board so that we can have a fresh start Peter responded with "That's your issue". Summary of the meeting here: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=594|
